Initial Course & Exam

The CSWIP Visual Welding Inspector course is designed for Welders, operators, line inspectors and foremen who undertake visual examination of welded joints. It is also suitable for quality control staff associated with welding and all staff who need basic training in welding inspection coupled with a qualification in this field. This welding inspection course covers: visual inspection procedures; relevant codes of practice, terms and definitions; welding processes and typical welding defects; weld measurements; typical documentation and requirements; practical inspection and reporting.

Course Objectives

  • To identify various weld imperfections (defects)
  • To understand the relevant welding technology related to visual inspection
  • To understand the need for documentation in welding
  • To be aware of codes and standards related to inspection requirements
  • To carry out inspection of parent materials and consumables
  • To carry out visual inspection of welds, report on them and assess their compliance with specified acceptance criteria
  • To pass the CSWIP 3.0 Visual Welding Inspector qualification.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this course, however candidates must comply with Clause 1.3.4 of CSWIP Scheme Document WI-6-92. You can find a current version of this document on the CSWIP website

Original: Although there is no specific experience required for this course, it is recommended that candidates possess a minimum of six months’ welding-related engineering experience and two years’ industrial experience. In addition, candidates must also comply with Clause 1.3.4 of CSWIP document WI-6-92

Please note: Enrolment on this course does not constitute reservation of an examination.
All courses may be followed by a CSWIP Welding Inspector examination for candidates with appropriate experience as specified in the CSWIP Scheme Document WI-6-92.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CSWIP 3.0 Visual Welding Inspector Course runs for 2 consecutive days, from 8am – 4pm each day, including breaks.

In addition to the course we allow an additional half day for the exam.
We schedule half a day for the exam to take place, the total exam time is 120 mins.

There are 2 parts to the exam:

Part A1 – Duration: 90 mins
Content: Inspect Exam Specimens
24 Questions
Required pass mark: 70%

Part B1 – Duration: 30 mins
Content: Inspect T-Joint Fillet
14 Questions
Required pass mark: 70%
If you are unsuccessful in the CSWIP 3.0 VWI Examination, you may re-sit the parts you failed at another time, scheduled for Half Day Exam on the calendar.

You will have 12 months from the date of your Initial exam to re-sit the failed part/s, after this time you must repeat the complete examination.

The re-sit (or complete re-exam) may not be taken within 30 days of your previous exam, unless additional approved training is undertaken before the re-sit.

If you are unsuccessful in the re-sit exam, you’ll be required to take the full approved course again, followed by the full exam (if taken within 6 months of the initial course, you will receive a 50% discount on the course only).

The Practical Tuition course is offered by QMTS and is held on the Monday prior to the Re-sit Exam, 8am – 2pm.

The cut-off times for the Welding Inspection Course and Exams are as follows:

Completed Documents must be lodged and payment must be made 21 days prior to the course or exam.

All documents must be emailed to training@qmts.net.au. Your place on the course or exam is not confirmed until payment is received. (If all positions are filled by financial candidates, you will lose your spot on the course and/or exam.)
Candidates can find their provisional results on https://www.twitraining.com/home/exam-results To access your results you will need to provide the following:

Your customer number will be emailed to you in a Post Exam Email from QMTS Industry Training.
